New Faces of Peace at UQ

For some, the word peace conjures up images of hippies and free love. Not so for the new 2009 cohort of UQ Rotary World Peace Fellows.

For the nine new scholars housed at UQ's Rotary Centre for International Studies in peace and conflict resolution in the School of Political Science and International Studies, peace is a serious undertaking to which they are very committed.

The group comes from all corners of the globe and includes a UN worker from Slovakia, a former BBC journalist from Scotland and internationally acclaimed musician and children's author David LaMotte from the USA.

LaMotte Bids Farewell to Music, Mountains

Asheville is saying goodbye to an old friend this weekend. Singer-songwriter David LaMotte is packing up his family and moving to Brisbane, Australia, to pursue a master's degree in international relations, peace and conflict resolution at University of Queensland. The longhaired, sweet-faced poet was one of the leaders of the early songwriting scene in the mountains that included other open-tuning guitar wizards like David Wilcox and Chuck Brodsky. Fans will be able to follow LaMotte's new career through his Web site blog. Now at the end of a 17-year career (10 CDs, 2,000 shows in 45 states on four continents) and a yearlong farewell tour, this final concert at The Grey Eagle has sold out. LaMotte spoke recently about both the past and future.

A Change Is Going To Come

The word “change” has been thrown around a lot these days as a slogan, an idea, a mantra for some and even a source of derision for others. But for singer/songwriter David LaMotte, change isn’t just a buzzword—it’s where he finds himself and his career.

Peacemaker: LaMotte is retiring from music to pursue a World Peace Fellowship.

“Changing countries, changing careers, fatherhood, it’s a big deal,” LaMotte says.

The performer, who over the course of a 10-album career has walked the line between heart-on-his-sleeve folkie and champion for social justice and human rights across the world is ready for his next step as a musician—retirement.
