I don’t know when I’ve been as excited about a concert as I am about this one.
Last summer I was boarding a flight to Asheville from Atlanta, coming home from a show somewhere, when I spotted a familiar hat in the crowd boarding the plane. I made my way over to greet my friend David Holt, who was also coming home from a show, and we chatted for a few minutes before buckling in for the short ride home. David is an extraordinary and talented entertainer, best known for his years touring with Doc Watson, his Grammies, and his appearance in O Brother, Where Art Thou? When we got to Asheville, we stood by the baggage carousel and talked for a few minutes more.
“It’s a good thing David Wilcox wasn’t on this flight,” I said. “It would be dangerous for all three of Asheville’s David songwriters to be in one place at the same time.” David H. smiled and said, “You know, we should do that show.”
On February 21, 2015, we will do just that. We have been getting together regularly this month to practice, plan and laugh together, and we have been having a ball, learning (and sometimes mischievously re-writing) each other’s songs, swapping stories and hanging out just for the joy of it. Though we have all known each other for years and any two of us could have been found at the same benefit concerts a time or two over the years, this will be the first time that all three of us have been on the bill together.
We will all be together on stage for almost the entire concert, backing each other up. I guess the bottom line is this: the rehearsals have been so much fun that I know the concert is going to be a blast. This week we are starting the publicity on the show, but half of the tickets are already sold just through word of mouth, so if you would like to join us, you may want to get your tickets soon!
