News from Guatemala — Chonita is visiting!

Chonita is visiting! And you can meet her!

When I close this laptop, I’ll be getting in the car and heading to Atlanta to pick Chonita Pablo Lacan up from the Atlanta airport. Sarah Robinson Bryan, the Director of PEG Partners, will be road-tripping with me, and we can’t wait to see our friend and colleague.  It will be her first time leaving Guatemala, and we are thrilled to welcome her here.

Chonita is a teacher at the Escuela David LaMotte in Tzanchaj (for the record, I suggested a different name, but I’m deeply honored). The organization that Deanna and I founded in 2004, PEG Partners, has been working with this school since 2015, and we are extremely excited about the next chapter of our work together. We recently raised the funds to buy land for a new school building, and this coming year will be heavily occupied with building it.

The school is bilingual – teaching in Spanish, which is necessary for further education, business, etc., and Tz’utujil, the local Mayan language. Chonita teaches Tz’utujil, and is teaching a new generation to preserve their own culture as she does so.

We look forward to introducing you to Chonita who will share about the culture, language, and people of Santiago, Atitlán, and about this amazing school in Tzanchaj.  David will also play a couple of songs.
The meal will feature simple and delicious Guatemalan-style food of beans, rice, tortillas, plantain, avocado, etc., and will be vegetarian, with gluten free options. Please RSVP here so that we will know how much food to prepare.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Location: Land of the Sky United Church of Christ, 15 Overbrook Place, Asheville 28805.
In the Fellowship Hall, signs will help direct.
Date: Tuesday, November 27
Time: 6pm – 8pm
Admission: No one turned away.  $10-$20 suggested.
Please RSVP by Monday, Nov. 26, so we can be sure to have the right amount of food!
