This was such a fun conversation, and a poignant ride on a Time Machine back to 2006, when my record Change was released. The album features Stephanie Winters, a close friend and brilliant cellist, with Chris Rosser in the producer’s chair. It’s unlike any other record I’ve made, and I love looking back on it.
Anthony Ihrig and Mother Banjo (Ellen Stanley) have a wonderful podcast called “Back Catalog Listening Party” that invites artists to choose an album from their… well, back catalog, and then they interview the artist about that album, featuring five or six songs. The conversation was rich, nuanced, and fun, and it is unlike any interview I have ever done.
And I highly recommend that you investigate more of their shows. They have now done 200 episodes. Some of my songwriting heroes have done the show, and these are great conversations to get to sit in on, if you’re into music and songwriting.
But for now, here’s our hour-long conversation, with music interspersed, taped in front of a live audience at the Folk Alliance Regional Midwest (FARM) conference, in Lisle, Illinois, in 2023.
