David helps participants through practical and emotional challenges to writing well, debunking some myths about writing along the way. Through guided exercises and instructive examples, David teaches tools to invite inspiration, enrich content, and polish craft. Focusing first on writing strong poetry, we will turn to ways to shape and release tension in crafting songs, using rhythm, melody, song structure, and prosody. Creating a supportive and fun environment, David encourages growth and challenges participants, whatever their level of experience. Award-winning singer songwriter David LaMotte has produced ten CDs and performed 2000 concerts on four continents, appearing with Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Desmond Tutu. BBC Radio lauds his “charm, stories, humour, insightful songs, sweet voice and dazzling guitar ability.” David not only performs, but encourages others to discover the power of their own stories and find artful ways to tell them through his many poetry and songwriting workshops. LaMotte is a recipient of the prestigious Rotary World Peace Fellowship, which funded his masters degree in International Relations, Peace and Conflict Resolution at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. As part of that study, he also spent three months in rural India working with a Gandhian sustainable development organization. Because of his work as co-founder and director of PEG Partners, a non-profit organization supporting education in Guatemala, he was nominated as a “Hero of Humanity” in World Ark, a publication of Heifer International, and named a “Madison World Changer” by his alma mater, James Madison University.
